SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Saturday was an opportunity for Santa Clara Athletics to celebrate its past and present.
The Broncos presented their 2016 Hall of Fame class Saturday evening during the annual Red and White Celebration at Malley Center on the Santa Clara campus.
This year's inductees included former men's basketball coach Dick Davey, Kelly (Rickon) Mitchell of men's rowing and women's cross country, women's soccer player Leslie Osborne and Randy Winn, who played both baseball and men's basketball.
The Red and White event, an end of academic year celebration, also was an opportunity to recognize current student-athletes with Senior Awards, as well as the department's endowment benefactors. The men's soccer team, which captured the 2015 West Coast Conference title, received rings for its accomplishment.
In all, 12 senior student-athletes were bestowed awards. The soccer teams secured the top male and female awards, which in addition to exceling in competition require at least a 3.30 minimum grade-point average. Dani Weatherholt of women's soccer was the voted as the Henry Schmidt Award recipient and Kendall McIntosh of men's soccer earned the Victor Corsiglia Award.
The Hall of Fame ceremony, a private function, was held Friday at the de Saisset Museum on school's campus.
Davey first served as an assistant coach beginning in the 1977-78 season before taking over as head coach in 1992-93, leading the Broncos to three NCAA Tournament appearances while compiling 251 wins and finishing among the top three in the West Coast Conference standings nine times in his 15 years.
Mitchell was a two-time U.S. Olympian who was awarded a Congressional gold medal for the boycotted 1980 games. She went on to captain the 1984 Olympic women's rowing team that won a silver medal. She competed for both the Santa Clara men's rowing team and women's cross country.
One of the most decorated women's soccer players in West Coast Conference history, Osborne was a three-time All-American who won the 2004 Honda Award as the top performer in the nation. She went on to play nine seasons professionally, as well as earning a spot on the U.S. National team, playing in the 2007 FIFA World Cup.
Winn started at Santa Clara playing both baseball and basketball before concentrating on the diamond his final three seasons. As a junior, he helped guide the Broncos baseball team to the 1994 NCAA Tournament. He earned All-WCC honors as an outfielder the following season before embarking on a 13-year Major League Baseball career.
2016 Santa Clara Athletics Senior Awards
Jim Jennings Award
• Logan Breen (men's basketball manager)
Senior non student-athlete for his or her service to the athletics department. The award is in honor of Jim Jennings who served as a volunteer in Santa Clara Athletics for more than 20 years.
Pat Malley Award
• Kert Woods (baseball)
• Andi Tostanoski (women's soccer)
One male and one female senior student-athlete who best demonstrate the qualities, character, competitive spirit and will to excel on and off the field of competition. The award is in honor of former football coach and director of athletics Pat Malley.
DJ Frandsen Award
• Delphine Rouvillois (women's tennis)
A male or female student-athlete who used courage, perseverance and spirit to overcome adversity and now serves as a role model for inspiration. The award is in honor of former men's basketball manager David Frandsen Jr. who inspired many with his battle with cancer which ultimately claimed his life.
Jim Shea Award
• Camille Dyer (women's cross country/track)
In years past, this award was bestowed to the most courageous football player. It now recognizes one male or female student-athlete who has courageously led his or her team through selfless actions and been a leader in the campus community. Jim Shea was the first Santa Clara student-athlete whose life was cut short while serving in the Vietnam War.
Carroll Williams Award
• Molly Walker (women's rowing)
A senior who bests defines what it means to be a Santa Clara student-athlete. Someone who excels in the classroom and on the athletically while making an outstanding contribution in community service.
Senior Academic Award
• Ryan Greenough (men's cross country/track and field) - 3.923 GPA
• Julie Vass (women's soccer) - 3.985 GPA
Presented to the male and female senior student-athletes with the highest grade-point averages.
James D. Farwell
• Steven Wilson (baseball)
• Mary Kriege (women's cross country/track)
Awarded annually to one male and one female student-athlete who best combine academic and athletic excellence (minimum: 3.30 GPA). James Farwell was the longtime Santa Clara men's and women's rowing coach.
Henry Schmidt Award
• Dani Weatherholt (women's soccer)
Given annually to the school's top senior female student-athlete. Henry Schmidt was the first Santa Clara's athletic trainer, a position he held for 50 years.
Victor Corsiglia Award
• Kendall McIntosh (men's soccer)
Given annually to the school's top senior female student-athlete. Victor Corsiglia was the longtime supporter of Santa Clara Athletics.
