Red and White Celebration Registration
SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara University and the Bronco Bench Foundation are proud to announce the 2018 Athletic Hall of Fame Class, honoring some of the great athletes in school history.
The 2018 class, which includes Bryan Barker, Tony Tebbutt, Terry Malley, Fran Mullins, Jim Nicholas, George Stein, and Lisa Swendsen will be honored on Saturday, May 12, during the sixth annual Red and White Celebration, which is presented by Heritage Bank of Commerce. To attend the festivities, which begin at 6 p.m. in Leavey Center, register here.
In addition to the presentation of the Hall of Fame inductees, the program features Senior Awards for current student-athletes, as well as recognition of endowment benefactors and men's soccer program, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in the fall.
INDUCTEE PROFILES
Bryan Barker '86
Football
Barker was a punter for the Broncos and went on to have an illustrious professional career. After graduating from Santa Clara as the all-time leader in punts, Barker went on to play 15 years in the NFL with the Kansas City Chiefs, Jacksonville Jaguars, Washington Redskins, Green Bay Packers, and St. Louis Rams. Barker was an All-Pro selection and Pro Bowler in 1997 and won the NFL Mackey Award as the best punter in the conference three times. His streak of 878 consecutive punts without a block ranks second in NFL history.
Terry Malley '76
Football
Malley began his Santa Clara career as a quarterback from 1973-1976 under his legendary father, Pat Malley and took over as head coach after his death in 1985. In his first season, Malley led the Broncos to an 8-2-1 record and was named Western Football Conference Coach of the Year. Malley finished his career with a 49-33-1 record before moving on to the Arena Football League, where he was offensive coordinator and assistant coach of the San Jose Sabercats. During his tenure, the Sabercats won three Arena Bowl Championships.
Fran Mullins '79
Baseball
Mullins played infield at Santa Clara from 1976-79. In 1979, Mullins was named an All-American, and he served as a driving force behind the Broncos' 24-12 record and first place finish in the conference. That year, Mullins had a .316 batting average and led the team in RBIs and home runs. After a strong career at Santa Clara, Mullins was drafted in the third round of the MLB amateur draft by the Chicago White Sox. Mullins played professional ball from 1979-1986. After making the Major Leagues with the White Sox in 1980, he went on to play for the San Francisco Giants in 1984 and the Cleveland Indians in 1986. Mullins played every infield position, with his strong arm proving him especially capable on the left side of the diamond. Throughout his Major League career, Mullins accumulated a stellar .963 fielding percentage.
Jim Nicholas '33
Men's Basketball
Nicholas attended St. Ignatius College Preparatory in San Francisco where he played baseball, football, and basketball. In his first year playing basketball at Santa Clara, Nicholas was an All-Californians First Team selection. The next year, Jim led the Broncos to a 15-3 record, which was the best record on the Pacific Coast and was again an All-Californians First Team selection. He was involved off the court as well as he was junior class president and chairman of the junior prom committee. After graduating, Nicholas joined the Dean Witter & Co. team where he was named captain and led the team to a Montgomery Street Championship and undefeated season.
Lisa Swendsen '98
Women's Basketball
Swendsen (formerly Sacco) played basketball at Santa Clara from 1994-98. During her time with the Broncos, she was recognized as the WCC Player of the Year (1997-98), WCC Tournament MVP (1997-98) and named First Team All-WCC twice (1996-97, 1997-98). As a member of the 1,000 point club, Swendsen ranks 21st all-time in points, fifth in assists, third in steals, and seventh in 3-point shooting percentage. Swendsen now works for the university as Assistant Director for University Protocol and Events.
George Stein '50
Baseball and Men's Basketball
Stein excelled as a basketball and baseball player with the Broncos. In basketball, Stein was recognized as a United Press All-Pacific Coast Basketball Team honorable mention and member of the All-Cow Palace Intercollegiate Basketball Team. On the baseball diamond, Stein was a standout pitcher for the Broncos and signed a professional contract with the Yankees after his college career. Stein also had a tremendous impact outside of sports, as he founded and served as president of the Napa High School Hall of Fame Foundation.
Tony Tebbutt '72
Men's Soccer
Tony Tebbutt played soccer for Santa Clara from 1968 to 1971. Tebbutt's 1968 team ranks first in average goals per game in Santa Clara History (3.4). Tebbutt was an All-Pacific Soccer Conference selection in all four years he played at Santa Clara. Tebbutt ranks second in Santa Clara history in goals (38) and fifth in points (76). After Santa Clara, Tebbutt went on to earn an MBA from Stanford, then enjoyed a long career as a Pharmaceutical executive. Recently, Tebbutt has found success as an author. He has published two novels, A Rising Son in the Land of Nine Dragons and The Rx Carousel.
