Six Student-Athletes Recognized for Achievements in Classroom and Community

STORY: How Do You Win a Fulbright?

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – For some graduating Santa Clara student-athletes, commencement was not the only accomplishment to celebrate. Six Broncos were recently recognized for their achievements in the classroom and community.

Kirsten Mead, volleyball • The Charles and Barbara Hazel Outstanding Student in Economics Award

This award, given in recognition of the contributions made by Charles and Barbara Hazel in the Economics department, is given annually to the graduating senior economics major judged outstanding in scholarship, leadership, and service by the faculty of the department.

Reilley May, men's water polo • The Outstanding Student in Finance Award

This is awarded to the graduating senior finance major recognized by the faculty of the department as having achieved high academic performance, possessing strong leadership skills, exhibiting a commitment to service, and demonstrating career potential for professional success in finance.

Marisa Rudolph, women's cross country/track and field • Fulbright Scholar

As a Fulbright scholar, Rudolph will spend her time conducting research in Ghana into how private agricultural extension fosters the public good, especially for women. The idea stemmed directly from her time as a fellow with Global Social Benefit Fellowship, when she worked on the team conducting social-impact action research for a company that provided services to farmers in Ghana.

Hollynd Boyden, women's rowing (Graduated 2017) • Fulbright Scholar

As a Fulbright ETA, Boyden will be teaching English and conducting nutritional workshops to address the growing problem of diabetes in Mexico. She also plans to use the Fulbright experience to improve her Spanish skills and inform her future plans to pursue a career in education and public health advocacy, with a focus on Spanish-speaking communities.

Giannina Ong, women's tennis • Student Life Award

Ong was recognized for her dedication and contributions to the overall quality of life for those in the University community. Ong found time to volunteer in both women's shelters and soup kitchens while been a captain of the women's tennis team, a Hackworth fellow, and the president of Alpha Sigma Nu, the Jesuit honors society.

Brynn Sargent, men's cross country/track and field • Student Life Award

Sargent, like Ong, was recognized for his dedication to the improving the quality of life in the University community. Sargent has been an impact member of both the men's cross country and track and field teams, a Johnson Scholar in 2017, and a research assistant for Dr. Elizabeth Dahlhoff while he prepares to take the MCAT exam.
