Legendary Baseball Coach Joins Santa Clara Athletics
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – One of the premier coaches in college baseball history, member of American Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame, and gold-medal winning Olympic baseball coach, Mark Marquess has been hired as Special Assistant to Santa Clara Director of Athletics, Renee Baumgartner.

In this new role, Marquess, who served as Stanford head baseball coach for 41 years and is the fourth winningest coach in Division I history, will be a mentor for all Santa Clara coaches and staff, serve on campus committees, support development, and work on special projects.

"I am ecstatic to hire Coach Marquess as a Special Assistant. His experience will be a tremendous asset for our coaches and the success he had throughout his coaching career will resonate at Santa Clara," Baumgartner said. "His energy and wisdom are infectious, and it will be great to have him as part of the Santa Clara family."

Marquess retired from coaching in 2017.  During his tenure at Stanford, he led the Cardinal to 14 trips to the College World Series, including back-to-back national titles in 1987 and 1988. His mentorship and guidance have helped numerous former players and assistants become head coaches including:

• Rusty Filter - former assistant coach and current Santa Clara Head Coach
• A.J. Hinch - former player and current Houston Astros Manager
• David Esquer - former player/assistant coach and current Stanford Head Coach
• Mark Machtolf – former player and current Gonzaga Head Coach
• Ryan Garko - former player/assistant coach and current Pacific Head Coach

"I am very excited for this unique opportunity" Marquess said. "I am looking forward to working closely with Renee, who is a world-class athletic director, and the Santa Clara Athletics staff and coaches."

In addition to his coaching prowess, Marquess has ties to the Mission Campus.

"My wife, Susan and my middle daughter, Annie are proud Santa Clara alumni and I have a great appreciation for Santa Clara's commitment to athletic and academic excellence, and most importantly the Jesuit value system at the core of the University" said Marquess. "I feel honored to now be a part of that mission."

Marquess begins his new role at Santa Clara this week.
