Wagner Santa Clara Hall of Fame Profile
SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Former women's soccer All-American Aly Wagner will be one of 10 inductees in the West Coast Conference Hall of Honor, as announced by the league Wednesday.
The other nine inductees are: BYU's Wally Joyner (baseball), Gonzaga's Heather Bowman (women's basketball), Loyola Marymount's Terrell Lowery (men's basketball), Pacific's Dell Demps (men's basketball), Pepperdine's Nina Matthies (women's volleyball), Portland's David Kinsella (cross country/track), Saint Mary's Ruth Montgomery (women's soccer), San Diego's Hank Egan (men's basketball), and San Francisco's Taggert Bozied (baseball).
The Hall of Honor class will be formally inducted at the WCC Hall of Honor Brunch on Sat., March 7 at 9 a.m. at the Mardi Gras Ballroom in the Orleans Hotel and each inductee will be honored throughout the course of the basketball tournaments.
Wagner helped lift Santa Clara women's soccer to the top of the soccer world with three trips to the NCAA College Cup and the 2001 National Championship.
Her performance on the field nabbed her numerous awards including two First Team All-America honors and the 2002 Hermann Trophy.
She still holds the Santa Clara program records for postseason goals, assists, points, and game-winning goals, including the lone tally in the 2001 national title victory over North Carolina.
Wagner would go on to the U.S. Women's National Team from 1999 to 2008 and play for her country in the 2003 and 2007 FIFA Women's World Cups and the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games. She earned 131 caps and scored 21 goals to go with 42 assists.
She also had a long professional career that began as the number one pick by the San Diego Spirit of the Women's United Soccer Association. She also played for the Boston Breakers, Olympique Lyonnais, and the Los Angles Sol.
In 2018, she made English-language television history by becoming the first women's to announce the FIFA World Cup as a color analyst. She also called the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup in France and calls games for NBC, FOX, and Lifetime.
