Andrew McCabe was hired in October 2018 and is in his second year as the Assistant Director of Sports Medicine. In his role, he works primarily with the men’s basketball program and assists the sports medicine department with both internal and external operations.
McCabe comes to SCU following a stint at San José State University where he was responsible for the evaluation, care, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries for the football team.
McCabe brings a wealth of sports medicine experience across a diverse range of clinical settings. His work has included serving in roles as an exercise specialist with Olympic Physical Therapy in Bellevue, Wash. and as an athletic trainer/teacher at the high school level in the state of Texas. He has worked directly as the clinical coordinator with the team physician for the Texas Tech Red Raiders. After his time in Texas, he moved to the Bay Area and joined Stanford Children’s Orthopedic and Sports Medicine. While at Stanford, he provided patient care and collaborated on research projects. He co-authored an article entitled The Lower Extremity Grading System (LEGS) to Evaluate Baseline Lower Extremity Performance in High School Athletes, which was published in the International Journal of Sports Physical Therapy (Volume 13, Number 3, June 2018).
He earned his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from Trinity Western in 2007. As an undergraduate he was an athletic trainer for the men’s soccer team. McCabe went on to earn a master’s degree in athletic training from the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in 2011. While at Texas Tech he was an athletic training intern for the track & field and cross-country teams. He also completed internships with Sundown (Texas) High School, Monterey High School, the Seattle Mariners Minor League club, and Lubbock Sports Rehab.
McCabe is a native of Maple Valley, Wash. He and his wife, Laura, reside in Santa Clara.
