Rusty Weekes ’71, a former Bronco baseball player and football coach, is in his 10th year as the Bronco Bench Foundation executive director. Weekes, an associate athletic director, has focused on the dual roles of executive director of the Bronco Bench Foundation where he has helped raise over $25 million.

He also previously served as senior marketing director responsible for all external marketing and in game promotions.

Prior to coming to Santa Clara, Weekes owned his own sales management consulting firm for three years, and prior to that, he worked as vice president of sales in the communications industry with Comcast, AT&T Broadband, TCI, RCN Communications and Viacom.

Besides Weekes’ expansive experience in sales and marketing, he has worked behind the scene as a producer as well as in front of the camera as an on-air personality with the San Francisco Giants, and with pre-event programs for the boxing industry and college and professional soccer.

“We are thrilled to be bringing Rusty back to Santa Clara where he belongs,” said former Santa Clara Athletic Director Dan Coonan. “He emerged from an incredible field of over 125 applicants for this position not only by proving his considerable sales and marketing skills and experience, but by emphasizing how this will be for him a true labor of love. While so many of our Bronco Bench members already know him well, those who don’t will relish getting to know this Bronco and help him take this Foundation to new heights. This is a very good day for Santa Clara Athletics.”

“You very rarely have a second chance at a love affair and I am getting that by coming back to Santa Clara,” said Weekes, a 1967 graduate of Bellarmine College Prep in San Jose. “Some of my fondest memories were spent on the field at Buck Shaw Stadium as both a baseball player and a football coach. I am thrilled and honored to take over the reigns as the BBF Director. I am anxious and excited to rejoin the Bronco team and share my passion for winning.”

The Bronco Bench Foundation was established in 1962 to raise funds for the construction of Buck Shaw Stadium, and since that time the BBF has contributed in excess of $50 million to the Athletic Department, contributing roughly $1.5 million per year in endowment income, annual donation and event revenue.

Weekes graduated from Santa Clara in 1971, with a degree in English. He played baseball at Santa Clara (1967-71) and one year of football (1967). As the captain of the baseball team, he garnered All-West Coast Conference honors in 1971 and helped lead the Broncos to three consecutive league titles. During his time, the Broncos advanced to the NCAA tournament all three years, and in each one ended up one game away from the College World Series.

Upon graduation Weekes coached both the freshman football and baseball teams at Santa Clara before moving to Moreau High School, where in addition to coaching football, baseball and tennis, he also served as the director of student activities and taught religious education.

Following Moreau High School, Rusty came back to Santa Clara for seven years. One of the highlights of his coaching career was guiding the Broncos to the Division II National Semifinal game (1980) where they defeated Northern Michigan at Buck Shaw Stadium. He then spent two years coaching linebackers at the University of the Pacific before going into the corporate world.

Weekes lives in San Jose and has two children Pat and Kelly, and four grandchildren.
