Peter Fields - Senior Associate Athletic Director, Development

Peter Fields is in his first year as Senior Associate Athletic Director of Development at Santa Clara University after spending 14 years as Director of Athletics at Montana State University.

While Fields led Montana State athletics, the department increased graduation rates, won several conference championships, gave back to the community, and expanded or constructed new facilities for all sport venues.

In the summer of 2010, Montana State Athletics began an end zone facility campaign with a goal to raise $6 million. The project's scope increased during construction to a goal of $7 million.  The project’s roots, however, lied in early cultivation which helped produce many of the complex’s major donors. The success of the project was a result of the coordinated effort by athletics, the university and donors. Another successful collaborative capital project at Montana State under Fields began in Spring 2014. This project was a $3.2 million renovation to the Brick Breeden Field House, bringing together Athletics, the University, and students. In 2016, Fields received an Awards for Excellence, which is chosen annually by 40 senior students who each select a Faculty or Staff member that positively influenced them as a mentor.

A 1979 University of Maine, Presque Isle graduate, Fields was a standout varsity wrestler who earned induction into his school’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006. He was also a wrestling coach at UMPI and earned his M.A. from the U.S. Sports Academy in 1987. He came to Montana State from Missouri, where he worked from 1996-2002, including the last four as Associate AD. He previously worked at Toledo (1988-96) and Kent State (1985-88) in business and budget management, with a wide range of duties at each stop.

Fields’ wife Debbie has worked the past 20 years as a registered nurse in school systems. They have a daughter, Briana, who was married this summer in Columbus, Ohio, and currently works as an associate director of compliance at Ohio State University.
