RESULTS

SEATTLE — Three-event school record holder Mary Kriege began the 2016 Santa Clara track season with a standout performance in the women's 5000 meter race. Kriege won her heat with a time of 16:37.38, which bested the previous mark by more than 19 seconds.

Kriege was one of four Broncos to run in the team's only event during the indoor season.

"I was really impressed with Mary's race," head coach Felipe Montoro said. "She showed great discipline early and wasn't afraid to be aggressive and go for it the second half of the race. She got a quality win in her heat and a big PR of 16:37. I can't wait until her next race."

Joey Berriatua — Men's 3000m — 8:21.19 — 2nd Place of 14

Coach Montoro: "Joey ran an outstanding race for 2nd in his heat. It was a tactical affair so a fast time wasn't in the cards. He ran about seven seconds faster the second half of the race and nearly got the win. He will be redshirting the outdoor season as he continues to build strength for the future."

Bryan Crook — Men's 5000m — 14:29.97 — 12th Place of 26

Coach Montoro: "Bryan, like Mary, also showed his experience in the early stages of his race. His time of 14:29 is third all-time and he too will have several more opportunities during the outdoor season to improve."

Heather LaPlante — Women's 5000m — 18:02.15 — 14th Place of 17

Coach Montoro: "Heather had been sick all week and but we decided to give it a go anyway and she ran well all things considered. I was happy with her effort and thought she showed real grit. I am looking forward to when she gets 100 percent healthy and can get back to training hard in preparation for the outdoor season."

Grayson Murphy — Did Not Run

Coach Montoro: "Graysee had been nursing a sore hamstring all week, and while it is doing much better, we decided not to risk it and held her out. She has run every step of every workout with Mary this year, so the outdoor season should be really exciting for her as well."
