SAN FRANCISCO — Santa Clara track & field continued to gain experience in its buildup to April at the Johnny Mathis Invitational Saturday at Cox Stadium. The Broncos competed in nine different races, including a pair of relays, as part of their first big meet of the outdoor season.

"It was a very good day at the track," head coach Felipe Montoro said. "Collectively, we executed well in our heats and were tough in the last half of the races."

Men

Santa Clara's top finishers were Nicholas Mantovani (fourth place, 400 meters), Ross Corey (third place, 800 meters) and Evan Misuraca (seventh place, 5000 meters). Brynn Sargent won his 800 meter heat and took fifth place overall in the event.

"Brynn, who has been injured for two years and is limited to two-to-three days of running per week, dipped under the two-minute mark in the 800 meter by running 62-57," Montoro said. "That was the highlight of the meet for me."

Women

The Broncos were led by Greer Chrisman (seventh place, 800 meters), Grayson Murphy (third place, 1500 meters) and Kaitlyn Kuehn (fifth place, 5000 meters). Chrisman teamed up with Anika Renken, Hannah Wood and Karen Mac to take second place in the women's 4x400 meter relay.

Unattached

The Broncos had a few runners race unattached and churn out solid performances. Redshirt sophomore Joey Berriatua won the men's 5000 meter race by more than five seconds and Jeffrey Stalun took fourth place in the men's 1500.
