BERKELEY, Calif. — Santa Clara track and field began the homestretch run of the its 2016 season with a number of breakthrough races Friday and Saturday at the Brutus Hamilton Open & Challenge. In total, 10 Broncos set personal best marks.

"I was impressed with a number of athletes who had breakthroughs today," head coach Felipe Montoro said.

Will Burschinger ran a 4:04.78 in the 1500m to lower his top collegiate time by more than six seconds. Burschinger, Bryan Crook, Brynn Sargent and Matt Burke all set 1500m personal best marks.

"Will has been steadily improving since walking onto the team last spring," Montoro said. "He has had a ton of improvement so far and ran a big PR in the 1500m."

Santa Clara had a good day across all distances, with Jean-Baptiste Tooley and Evan Misuraca setting new collegiate records in the 800m and Jack Prazich running his fastest career 5000m.

Julia Wood doubled up in the 800m and 1500m; she ran a 2:19.57 in the former for the fastest time in her first season with the Broncos. Mary Kriege was the only Bronco to compete on Saturday, and came within 1.5 seconds of a personal best at the 1500m.

"Julia had a great double and looks like she is ready for more," Montoro said. "Mary has been dealing with a bad bout of poison oak, but still ran close to her best in a very competitive 1500m and I was impressed with her effort."

Greer Chrisman finished less than one tenth of a second shy of her 800m PR with a 2:24.22. Allison Maio ran at 5000m for the third time this season and posted her fastest time of the year with an 18:45.14.
