LAWRENCE, Kan. — The first two Santa Clara female track and field postseason qualifiers are off to a good start at the NCAA West Region Preliminary Meet Friday at Rock Chalk Park. Grayson Murphy set a 3k Steeplechase school record for the Broncos; both she and Mary Kriege finished well above seeding in their respective events.

"Both women ran great races," head coach Felipe Montoro said. "Mary ran a classic Kriege race — very even splits and moved up the whole way. Graysee was one of only three women in the field of 48 that set a personal best on the day."

Murphy broke her own school record with a 10:23.22, less than a second faster than the time she set at this season's Mt. SAC Relays. She finished in the top half of her heat by taking 7th place and came in 19th overall out of 48 runners. Murphy was seeded 33rd entering the race.

Kriege took part in the day's first track event — the 10k — and ran the race in 35:17.17. She finished 22nd overall of 48 runners, 18 spots higher than her seed entering the race (40th). Kriege was originally scheduled to run on Thursday night before inclement weather led to delays and rescheduling of several events.

Both runners are slated to compete in Saturday's 5k, which begins at 1:20 p.m. CDT (11:20 a.m. PDT).
