The Winter Quarter has drawn to a close and the Mission Harriers have prepared themselves for a banner track season.
The women competed in the San Jose Mercury News 10K and were led by Erin Skourtes. She established school records for the race with her 41:57 and 22nd place finish. Ellie Guy set the marks of 42:07 and 27th place last year. Jenny Smokey finished 2 places behind while running with a cold, narrowly missing the school record. Katie Malinak in second, Milena Basile in fourth, and Laura Parrado in fifth took honors in the 16-19 age category. This is the third straight year that three Broncos placed in the top six of this age group. Kristin Love and seniors Allison Schaub and Ellie Guy paced Kristin Love and Allison Schaub to PR's on the course. Ashley Weger dropped 5 minutes from her race last season and Shannon Gleeson improved despite a short training period while recovering from a stress fracture.
The men did an intra squad time trial and the freshmen impressed. Chris Spicer, sitting on pacesetter Dominic Ricci, led the group in the 3000 meters with a sub 30 last 200 in pushing four Broncos under 10 minutes. Likewise, Thomas Chapman kicked by pacesetter Mike Helms in taking the 1500 with 4 Broncos under 4:16. Michael Wall has emerged to challenge his teammates after a solid and healthy winter of training.
The Broncos will race again in April with this schedule:
April 7 - San Francisco State
April 14 - Stanislaus State
April 21 - Long Beach State
April 28 - Chico State
May 5 - UC Santa Barbara
