Santa Clara Cross Country Teams Return to Action

Sept. 22, 2000

DAVIS, Calif. - The Santa Clara men's and women's cross country teams will return to action following a two-week layoff Saturday, traveling to Davis, Calif. for the over-500 competitor Aggie Invitational.

The Santa Clara men are coming off a team championship two weeks ago at the USD Invitational. The Broncos finished 12 points ahead of second-place USD and defeated WCC rivals Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount in the process. Three Santa Clara runners finished among the top six in that meet, including second-place Charlie Brenneman.

The men's division of the Aggie Invitational will feature 279 runners from 12 schools and a number of local running clubs competing on the 8k course.

On the women's side, the Aggie Invitational will feature 248 competitors from 14 colleges and several local running clubs navigating the 5k course. Santa Clara's Jenny Smokey and Annie Gastelim are expected to be among the college division favorites following their one-three finish at the USD Invitational two weeks ago. Smokey took a four-second victory in San Diego to help lead the Broncos to a second-place team finish.
