SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Santa Clara men's cross country team won the overall title, while the women's team finished second in the season opener for both teams at the USD Invitational, hosted by the University of San Diego.
Three Santa Clara men's runners finished among the six as the Broncos raced to a 12-point victory over second-place USD. Santa Clara tallied just 38 points in the meet with all five scoring runners finishing among the top 16 in the race. Charlie Brenneman was the high-finisher for the Broncos, finishing second with a time of 16:13 over the 3.1 mile course.
On the women's side, Bronco Jenny Smokey took the individual title with a 3.1-mile time of 20:01, finishing four seconds ahead of Jessica Howard from Point Loma Nazarene. Santa Clara finished second behind Point Loma by a 32-53 margin. Annie Gastelim finished third in the race for SCU.
The Santa Clara cross country teams will next be in action at the Aggie Invitational, hosted by UC Davis on Sept. 23.
