Santa Clara, Calif. - The Santa Clara University Department of Athletics and Recreation has named M. Felipe Montoro an assistant cross country coach for the men's and women's combined program, head coach Tom Service announced today.
Montoro, a native of Glendale, Calif. will begin his duties on August 1 and will be responsible for assististing in all coaching, administrative and recruiting aspects of SCU's distance programs. He will work under the supervision of Service, who was named the head coach of both teams last spring. Service had previously coached the women's team for the past three seasons. He replaced former men's head coach John Maloney who had led the program for 11 years.
"We are very excited for Felipe to join the staff at Santa Clara," said Service. "He brings a wide variety of experience to the position after working with both men and women in the past. He competed for two well-respected coaches as a collegian and worked under two while at Fullerton and UCSB. Felipe is also a top notch recruiter who will make an immediate impact on the combined program."
Montoro was an assistant coach for Cal State Fullerton's men's and women's cross country programs for the past two seasons, along with the track and field programs for the past three seasons. While at Fullerton, Montoro headed the recruiting efforts for the Titan men's distance runners and helped to lead two Titans to NCAA Regional qualifying times.
"I am really looking forward to working with the Santa Clara program and Tom Service," Montoro said. "Tom has made great improvements with the team in recent years and I hope I can help continue to make the program even stronger. It is going to be a great opportunity for me."
Prior to working with the Titans, Montoro was an assistant with the combined cross country program at UC Santa Barbara during the 2001 campaign. While with the Gauchos, Montoro assisted head coach Pete Dolan in recruiting and traveled with the B squad.
His collegiate career began at the University of Oregon before transferring to UC Santa Barbara in 1998. He competed under Dolan for three seasons and earned his bachelor's degree in History and Spanish.
While assisting at Cal State Fullerton, Montoro earned his master's degree in Kinesiology and Health Promotion. In 2003, he also won the Brea 8K with the winning time of 25:13.
