SALEM, Ore. - The Santa Clara University men's and women's cross country teams entered Saturday's Charles Bowles Invitiational Saturday at Bush Park looking to turn the corner as they head into the home stretch of the season that culminates with conference and regional championships.

Both teams posted encourging results with the Bronco women taking seventh place overall and the Santa Clara men's squad earning a 10th place finish. Sophomore transfer Jesse Baldwin-Phillipi earned the Broncos' top honors, finishing 46th overall with a 5,000-meter time of 18:36.95. For the men, freshman Michael Delaurenti was one place better than Chris Doerhoff, finishing 57th in an 8,000-meter time of 25:32.68.

The meet, which bills itself as the largest collegiate cross-country meet west of the Mississippi, is in its 30th year and annually features many of the top distance squads from throughout the West Coast.

Idaho won the women's Open Division, followed by Washington, Nevada, UC-Davis and Oregon State University. On the men's side, the UC-Davis team finished first, followed by Team XO, Portland State, Washington and Gonzaga Paul Kezes, running for Team XO (8K, 23:58.30), and Mary Kamau (5K, 17:06.15) from the University of Idaho, had the top times overall, as they finished first in the men's and women's Open Division races.

Senior Katie Hansen posted her best race of the season, finishing second on the squad with a time of 18:48.14 and in 52nd place overall. Ann Thomas was the teams third runner, finishing 57th in 18:54.00 Adriane Puetz and Robin Bell rounded out the SCU scoring, finishing 74th and 75th overall.

Doerhoff covered the Bush Park course in a time of 25:32.68 to finish second on the Bronco squad, while John Hinman placed 67th in a time of 25:43.25. John Paul Thyken was 91st overall in 26:06.65 and Christen Gumbs was SCU's fifth finisher in a time of 26:10.49.

Four Bronco women also competed at the San Francisco State Gator Cross Country Invitational at Golden Gate Park on Saturday. Sarah Scott led SCU, finishing 38th in a 5,000-meter time of 20:32. Kristen Morse posted a time of 20:42 to place 42nd, while Erin Davis was right behind her in a time of 20:48 to finish 43rd. Carrie Pogorelc saw her first competition at as Bronco, placing 53rd in a time of 22:45.
