Men's Cross Country Finishes Second at West Coast Preview

Sept. 13, 2008

The Santa Clara men's cross country team took second place to host Portland Friday afternoon at the West Coast Preview. Santa Clara scored 60 points to the Pilots top score of 45 points. The team has next weekend off before running at the Stanford Invitational on Sept. 27 in Palo Alto, Calif.

"The team was once again led by sophomore Robbie Reid. He is having an excellent season, finishing third overall. Fifth-year senior Chris Gumbs is also racing back into fine form after being side-lined with nagging injuries," said Santa Clara's head coach Tom Service. ""The team ran well and is working very hard so they weren't totally pressured in this race. Following the race plan, they stayed in the pack early and we look forward to the next meet at Stanford in a couple weeks."

The Broncos were once again led by Reid who finished third at 25:48.23. Also finishing in the top 10 was Chris Gumbs at 26:07.81 to cross the line in sixth place. It is Reid's second-straight top 10 finish this season.

Finishing in 12th place, Stephen Koch ran a 26:26.07, in 19th place Richard Zhu ran a 26:40.97 and Andy Backus was 21st at 26:44.39.
