Women's Cross Country Finishes as Runner-up at Hornet Jamboree

Sept. 14, 2008

At the Hornet Jamboree in Sacramento, Calif., the Santa Clara women's cross country team finished as the runner-up on Sat., Sept. 13, just three points behind champion San Francisco with 60 points to USF's 57 points. The Bronco men, who ran their "A" team at Portland the day before, were fifth with 140 points in Sacramento. Sacramento State's men won with 35 points.

The Broncos take next weekend off from competition before heading to Palo Alto for the Stanford Invitational on Sept. 27.

"The women were just edged by USF and ran very well. Our fifth scorer finished at 18:44 with Veronica running at 18:00 and that's important for our fifth scorer to finish with a low differential from first to fifth - 44 seconds. It was an excellent race for the women," said Bronco head coach Tom Service. "The B team was in action for the men in a four-mile race at Granite Regional Park and were led by John Laughlin and a strong freshman race by Travis Pederson."

The Broncos were led by two top-10 finishes on the women's side. Veronica Vazquez finished at 18:00 to finish ninth. Stephanie Wilson was right on her heels, finishing 10th at 18:04. Noelle Lopez was 19th at 18:28 and Anna Wheatley was 20th at 18:29. Rounding out the top five for Santa Clara was Jennifer Clarke, who ran an 18:44 across the finish line.

The men were led by John Laughlin who finished at 21:12 in the four-mile race to finish 23rd. Finishing 25th and 27th, respectively, Travis Pederson ran a 21:19 and Evan Hennessey ran a 21:30. Finishing 30th was Matt Wagner at 21:43 and 35th was Garrett Smith at 22:32.
