Santa Clara, Calif. - Santa Clara's Veronica Vazquez, Stephanie Wilson and Robbie Reid were all named to the West Coast Conference first team with their top 10 finishes at the WCC Championships Sat., Nov. 1 in Crystal Springs. The Bronco women finished third with 81 points. The men finished just one point out of third place with 110 points in fourth. SCU junior Alex Harkins placed 13th and was named to the WCC honorable mention team.
Bronco head coach Tom Service said the course ran slow due to rain and wind, but felt the Santa Clara team's `toughed it out'.
"We are really proud of all of the runners and especially Veronica, Stephanie and Robbie for their WCC first team honors. In addition, Alex as he has been injured and just started running three weeks ago and to collect honorable mention honors is big," said Service. "We will now take our results and begin preparing for the NCAA West Region Championships."
Portland swept both cross country titles for the 19th time in WCC history, scoring 43 points on the women's side and the No. 4 team in the country, the Pilot men, scored 38 points.
On the men's side, Portland extended one of the most impressive streaks in Division I athletics, capturing its 30th consecutive league title. The 30 consecutive conference titles trails only Arkansas, which has claimed 34 straight league crowns (17 SWC and 17 SEC titles). Portland's 30 consecutive cross country titles in one league marks the longest streak in the nation. LMU finished as runner-up in both races, making this year's championships the closet in recent memory. Portland senior All-American David Kinsella captured the WCC title with a time of 25:11, marking the fifth fastest time in conference history. Sophomore Tara Erdmann became the second LMU harrier in the past three years to win the WCC title when she crossed the finish line with a time of 21:54.
