    Erin Hartwig, sophomore from Glendale, Calif. has already had success in her first complete season of track at Santa Clara University. She has raced in the 800m, 1500m and 5000m this season, earning seasonal and personal records with times of 2:27:12, 4:47:08 and 18:39:75, respectively. She also has been a key runner on the Bronco 4x400m relay. Recently, SantaClaraBroncos.com (SCU) was able to speak with Hartwig (EH) about her season, future and experiences.

    The Bronco track team participated in the Woody Wilson Invitational hosted by UC Davis on Sat., April 16. Temperatures in the mid 80's provided excellent conditions for the middle distance events, but made things difficult for those athletes competing in the longer events. The highlight of the meet for SCU was senior Robbie Reid's victory in the 1500m.

    Robbie Reid, a senior from Los Altos, Calif. has been very involved here at Santa Clara University and now enters his last year on the Bronco’s track team. He has had an excellent start to the season placing third in the 800m at the Cal State Stanislaus meet as well as fifth overall at the UC Davis Aggies Open with a time of 1:54:02.   • Bronco Student-Athletes Post 3.0+ GPA for 12th time in 13 quarters

    With almost one-third of the student-athletes posting a 3.5 or better, Santa Clara University's student-athletes posted a 3.047 grade point average (GPA) for the Winter 2011 quarter. Santa Clara's student-athletes have achieved a 3.0 GPA or better 12 of the last 13 quarters. Santa Clara's cumulative GPA for its student-athletes is 3.081. For the second straight quarter, the women's cross country team (right) led all teams with a 3.406 GPA for the Winter 2011 term – the exact same GPA it recorded for the Fall 2010 term as well.

    Stephanie Wilson, a senior English major and local graduate of San Jose’s Archbishop Mitty, has begun her last track season as a Bronco this spring. Although she did not compete in the 2010 track season due to an injury, she had a record-setting year in cross-country as she was the 2009 NCAA All-American as well as 2009 WCC champion. The Broncos continue to progress throughout the season improving each weekend and there were a number of personal and seasonal bests set on the day.     The Santa Clara track season is beginning to feel like its in full swing. This weekend the Broncos will run at the UC Davis Open on Sat., March 12. Next weekend runners not still finishing finals, which are next week, will run at the Hornet Invite Sat., March 19. Finally, the full compliment of Bronco runners will take to the track to run either at the San Francisco Distance Carnival March 25 and 26 with a select number of runners who qualify running at the Stanford Invitational the same dates.

    The WCC Fall All-Academic teams were released today by the West Coast Conference and Santa Clara boasts 19 student-athletes on the list; eight divided amongst the teams and another 11 receiving honorable mention. Only one other school, Portland, placed more student-athletes on the conference’s all-academic lists than Santa Clara.

    After an extensive search, Santa Clara University announced on Wednesday Bronco associate head coach Felipe Montoro, in his seventh year with the program, has been promoted to head coach of the cross country and track programs at Santa Clara University as nine-year head coach Tom Service is retiring as of Dec. 15, 2010.

    The Bronco men’s cross country team finished 21st and the women 22nd at the NCAA West Regional Championship. After running to All-American honors last year, senior Stephanie Wilson finished 73rd and did not qualify for the NCAA Championship. Washington won the women’s title and Oregon bested Stanford’s men to win the men’s title.

    With five natives in tow and a 2009 All-American as well, Santa Clara’s Cross Country teams head to Oregon this weekend to compete in the NCAA West Regional Championship on Sat., Nov. 13 at the Springfield Country Club near Eugene, Ore. The women’s race, a 6K, will begin at 9:45 am. The men’s race, a 10K, will start at 10:45 am. Each of the more than 30 teams on each side will be vying for a spot at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. on Mon., Nov. 22.

    Santa Clara’s women were third at the Doc Adams Invitational on Saturday with 68 points at UC Davis. Meghan McNamara finished in fourth place for the Broncos. The Bronco cross country teams now turn their sites to the NCAA West Region Championship on Sat., Nov. 13 in Eugene, Ore.
