Bronco Harriers Run at adidas Notre Dame Invitational

Bronco Harriers Run at adidas Notre Dame Invitational
With runners battling the toughest conditions all day, as temperatures dipped into the low 50's with top gusts reaching 40 MPH or better, Santa Clara's men's cross country team finished 24th at the adidas Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Ind. In addition to the rain and wind, due to severe rain in the area over the last week, the course was extremely wet, with soft spots throughout.

Both Bronco teams will run at the Gator Invitational next weekend before hosting the Bronco Invitational on Sat., Oct. 15 at Baylands Regional Park in Sunnyvale.

The men's race at Notre Dame was dominated by No. 12 BYU, the newest member of the West Coast Conference, who won the men's race with 46 points. No. 4 Stanford finished fourth with 202 points.  Host No. 23 Notre Dame was 11th.

Bronco head coach Felipe Montoro had concerns as soon as the gun went off to start the race as there was quite a big pile-up with more than 20 runners falling at the start, including each of the Broncos with the exception of Robbie Reid.

Reid finished in 80th place.  Working with Reid to tie the school's 8K record last week at Stanford, sophomore Ben Demaree was forced to drop out of the race after getting hit on the head and bleeding after the pile-up

Austin Jones was the Broncos second runner at 26:09.  Ezana Tesfu was third at 26:21.  Peter Stephens was fourth at 26:41.  Luca Signore was the Broncos fifth finisher at 26:59.

"The biggest bummer is that we came out here to try and mix it up with some very good teams, but we never got the chance after the huge pile up at the start," said Montoro. "Rather than gain information about how much progress the team has made or how much more we need to make, we will find out how resilient we are and see if we can put this behind us and continue to improve and prepare for the post-season."
