NCAA Regional Information

With a berth to the NCAA Championship on the line, the Santa Clara cross country teams travel to the Stanford Golf Course to take part in the NCAA West Regional Championship on Sat., Nov. 12, hosted by Stanford University.

The men's 10,000-meter race is scheduled to start at 10 a.m., while the women's 6K meet will begin at 11:15 a.m. The West Regional features schools from states of Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon and Washington.

The top two men's and women's teams from each regional automatically qualify to the NCAA Championships that will take place on Nov. 21, in Terre Haute, Ind. Individual and team at-large bids will also be awarded following the nine regionals held around the country on Saturday. Those bids will be extended on Sunday.

"We are really looking forward to racing this weekend," said Bronco head coach Felipe Montoro. "The men are coming off a very good performance at the WCC Championships. Ben Demaree and Robbie Reid both were under the previous school record at Crystal Springs (previously held by Reid) and were All-Conference Honorable Mention and the team ran our best team time in school history as well. We are looking to better our previous highest finish at this meet, which would require besting the 2002 teams' 14th place finish."

Joining senior Robbie Reid and sophomore Ben Demaree on Saturday will be senior Austin Jones, senior Richard Zhu, junior Kevin Oliver, junior Marcos Hinojosa and sophomore Moises Venegas.

"The women have an opportunity to better their 6k times that they ran at the Stanford Invitational in September, and we have another crack at USD, who beat us at the WCC meet a few weeks ago," said Bronco assistant coach Chantelle Wilder. "This meet will serve as an opportunity for our young team to gain valuable experience, as this meet is easily the most competitive women's regional in the country."

Representing Santa Clara on the women's side will be senior Nicole Giove, juniors Carey Parker, Erin Hartwig and Hayley Ney as well as freshmen Mary Kriege, Kelly Ryan and Alex Garcia.

The men's race features No. 6 Stanford, WCC runner-up No. 8 Portland, No. 17 Oregon and No. 21 UCLA. The women's race has six ranked teams competing: No. 6 Washington, No. 8 Stanford, No. 11 Oregon, No. 16 Arizona, No. 36 Cal and WCC Champions No. 27 USF.
