The Santa Clara track team will run at the Aggie Open on Sat., March 15 at UC Davis. The Broncos will compete with a short squad this weekend due to final exams next weekend. Earlier this week Bronco head coach Felipe Montoro talked about the weekend plans, training during finals and what is on tap in the next few weeks.
FM: With Santa Clara's finals coming up next week, what are your plans for the Aggie Open this weekend?
SCU: We will only be competing a few events this weekend, as we prepare for finals and the remainder of the season. We are only competing in the 800m and 1500m events, with Audrey Hiatt in the 2000m steeplechase as the one exception outside of those two events.
SCU: What is your training like finals week?
FM: Practice is optional during finals week as the main focus is obviously on performing their best in the classroom. We re-group at the end of the week and have a competition at SF State on Saturday.
SCU: Will you have a training trip during spring break ?
FM: We give the team a few days off, but will be training together on campus from Wednesday throughout the remainder of the week.
SCU: Are there a couple meets you are pointing towards right now in the next month for your training?
FM: We have been really focused on the San Francisco State Distance Carnival on April 4th and the Mt. Sac Relays down in Southern California on April 17th and 18th.
SCU: Who have you been impressed with early on during track season on the men's side?
FM: Adrian Hinojosa and Bryan Crook have been looking great, but freshman Joey Berriatua has made the biggest improvements over the winter and we are excited to see what he can do this season.
SCU: What about on the women's side?
FM: Kelly Ryan's workouts have been significantly better than last year, and she has raced really well early this season too. Kaeli Hancock, a former hurdler in high school and at Diablo Valley College, has made the transition to the 800m faster than anticipated, and I am excited to see how she progresses this season as well.
