After taking last weekend off to adjust to the new quarter, Santa Clara's track team is back at it this weekend, running in the San Francisco Distance Carnival on Fri., April 4.  S.F. State coach Tom Lyons started this meet in 2004 and it has grown into a premier event and the Broncos are glad to be a part of it.

The S.F. State meet will be the place to be this weekend to run a top-notch 5K and 10K.  "The venue is one of the best for distance running," said Bronco head coach Felipe Montoro. "The track is well-protected from wind and the temperature at SF State is almost always what you want for a competitive 5k or 10k.  The men's 5K will be the most competitive race top to bottom, but the good thing about this meet is all the races are really outstanding."

To prepare for the weekend of race, the team has been doing a lot more race pace specific workouts over the last few weeks and has shifted their overall focus from preparing to race well to racing well.  The Broncos will run a full squad this weekend on both sides.

Ben Demaree is running his first 10k on the track, something Montoro is excited about.  "Ben has not been this healthy or fit since his sophomore cross country season, so we are really looking forward to his race," said Montoro.

Mary Kreige, who was sidelined for about a month with an Achilles issue, is 100 percent and ready to go this weekend in the 5k.

"Also on the men's side, Joey Berriatua was placed in a very competitive heat, so his race should be exciting as well," said Montoro.

Montoro added "the rain has been a welcome sight in the Bay Area.  It doesn't bother us though, you get wet, then you dry off, easy!"
