With 16 Teams Posting 3.0 or Better, Broncos Top Mark For 22nd Time in 23 Quarters

Topping 3.0 or better for the 22nd time in 23 quarters with 19 Bronco student-athletes achieving a 4.0 grade point average (GPA) and 16 of the 19 Bronco teams scoring a 3.0 term GPA or higher, Santa Clara University's student-athletes recorded a 3.125 GPA for the Spring 2014 quarter.  Santa Clara's cumulative GPA of 3.087 continues to climb for its student-athletes as well.

In addition, 108 of the Bronco student-athletes achieved a 3.5 GPA or higher in the Spring 2014 quarter with 45 Bronco student-athletes collecting a 3.8 GPA or higher. After the Spring 2014 quarter, there are 70 student-athletes with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.

"Over the past two quarters we have seen our cumulative GPA continue to increase while 16 of our 19 teams have earned a 3.0 grade point average or better.  We continue to proudly field teams comprised of athletes who are truly students, and we wouldn't do it any other way," said Santa Clara Athletic Director Dan Coonan.  "We congratulate our student-athletes on their outstanding academic achievements and we applaud our Bronco coaches and academic staff for the consistently high standards they set."  

For the second straight quarter, the women's tennis team led the women's side with the highest GPA at 3.496 for the Spring 2014 quarter.  Women's cross country has the highest cumulative GPA at 3.386.

"Our players did a wonderful job of balancing a difficult travel schedule and maintaining the highest standard of academic success.  I am always so proud of these ladies and what they are able to achieve.  We had a great 2014 season and are looking forward to an even better 2015," said Bronco head women's tennis coach Ben Cabell. 

For the 10th straight quarter, the men's cross country team had the highest term GPA.  The men's cross country team posted a 3.443 GPA in the Spring 2014 quarter and they also have the highest cumulative GPA at 3.405 – the highest cum for both the men's and women's teams.

"I am extremely proud of the balance that our student athlete continually show," said Bronco head men's cross country coach Felipe Montoro. "They truly embrace the idea of educating mind and body and most importantly, always do their best in both endeavors. Santa Clara provides so many resources that are crucial in the support of our student athletes, their time at SCU and in preparing them for the future."

Sixteen Bronco programs posted a 3.0 GPA or higher for the Spring 2014 quarter, with 12 teams posting a 3.1 GPA or higher. In addition, 14 teams have a 3.0 GPA or better as their cumulative GPA.

The 16 teams who posted a 3.0 or better GPA for the Spring 2014 quarter include: men's cross country, men's rowing, men's golf, men's track, men's soccer, men's tennis, women's basketball, women's golf, women's rowing, women's cross country, women's track, women's soccer, softball, women's tennis, volleyball and women's water polo.
