Cross Country to Host Saturday’s WCC Preview Meet at Baylands Park

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Santa Clara Cross Country is set for its second race of the season at Saturday's West Coast Conference Preview Meet. The host Broncos will take to the course at Baylands Park in nearby Sunnyvale for the first of three home meets in 2014.

"In cross country, knowledge of a course can be a real advantage," Bronco head coach Felipe Montoro said. "We are out [at Baylands] for workouts every week and are as familiar as possible with the course."

The Broncos are coming off a strong showing at the season-opening USF invitational, in which six women's runners and five men's runners finished in the top 30 of their respective races. The men's team took fourth place in the field of nine and the women's team took fourth place in the field of 10.

Race Schedule

Men's 8k – 9 a.m.

Women's 6k – 9:45 a.m.

The men's field consists of 90 total runners from eight schools, including conference opponents LMU, Pepperdine and USF. Also racing at the meet will be Cal Poly, Holy Names, UC Davis and UC Santa Cruz.

The women's field consists of 129 total runners from 11 schools, including the same teams as the men's schools along with Nevada and the WCC's Gonzaga and Pacific.

Saturday's event event presents a unique opportunity for the Broncos to run all healthy team members for the men's and women's sides.

"Anyone healthy enough will compete on Saturday," Montoro said. "Many competitions are limited to seven or 10 athletes, so being able to all race together is unique and will be a great opportunity for us."
