Cross Country Hosts WCC Championships Saturday

EYEBRONCO | Cross Country's Interval Training for the WCC Championships

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The top teams in West Coast Conference men's and women's cross country will be crowned Saturday at the WCC Championships, held at Santa Clara's home course, Baylands Park in Sunnyvale. It marks the third Bronco race at Baylands this season, following the WCC Preview Meet in September and the team's most recent race, the Bronco Invite in October.

"We are really excited to be hosting the WCC Championships," head coach Felipe Montoro said. "Our athletes have worked as hard as anyone in the field and are excited to test themselves on Saturday. Both teams are focused entirely on their individual efforts and attitudes."

Schedule – Saturday, November 1, 2014

The Field

More than one third of West Coast Conference programs are currently ranked in the USTFCCCA West Region Rankings with four teams on the men's side — Portland (2), Gonzaga (8), Santa Clara (14) and San Francisco (15) — and four teams on the women's side — Portland (7), LMU (11) and San Francisco (14).

"Our men have been performing great all season and we expect them to mix it up with the best the conference has to offer. Our women have been improving incrementally all season and they are ready to get after it."

History

With men's championships dating back to 1975 and women's championships back to 1985, this marks the first season Santa Clara will host either a men's or women's cross country conference championship. From 1985-2011, the conference championships were held at the Crystal Springs Course in Belmont, Calif. prior to being hosted by Portland in 2012 and Pepperdine in 2013.

From Coach Montoro

"The men and women have had our best two weeks of training of the season since the Bronco Invite two weeks ago. I am excited to see that improvement translate to tough racing."

"A lot of people have put in a lot of time and energy into ensuring that we put on the best meet possible, and for that [assistant coach Pete Cushman] and I are very grateful."
