NCAA West Regionals on Deck for Cross Country Friday

NCAA West Regionals on Deck for Cross Country Friday

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Santa Clara's cross country teams and individual runners will vie for a spot in the NCAA Championship race Friday when they head to the NCAA West Regionals at Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, Calif. The top two teams from the men's and women's sides advance as well as the top four individuals not from a qualifying team, provided they finish in the top 25 runners. This year's national championship race is scheduled for Nov. 22 in Terre Haute, Ind.

Santa Clara is one of 38 schools set to race at Friday's west regionals. In total, there are nine regionals across the country, which combine for 18 teams and 36 individual runners as automatic qualifiers. On Saturday, an NCAA subcommittee will select 13 teams and two individuals for at-large berths to the postseason.

"Both teams have recovered well from their efforts at the conference meet and are ready to go on Friday," head coach Felipe Montoro said. "The region is so very competitive that we are just focused on finishing as well as we can in such loaded fields. If both teams can match their efforts from the conference meet two weeks ago then we are going to surprise some teams and place well."

Race Schedule

Women's 6k — 11 a.m.

Men's 10k — 12 p.m.

"For the men, the 10k distance is an advantage for us, particularly with our frontrunners Kurt Ruegg and Bryan Crook," Montoro said.

Lineups

Women: Grayson Murphy, Kaitlyn Kuehn, Amia Nash, Allison Maio, Hannah Wood, Kelly Ryan, Elsa Valenzuela

Men: Joey Berriatua, Bryan Crook, Kurt Ruegg, Peter Stephens, Sean Roe, Noah Westfall, Adrian Hinojosa
