Track Begins Season with First Indoor Meet in Program History Friday

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — As the Santa Clara track team embarks upon its 2015 season Friday, the program will compete in its first indoor meet at the Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash. Five Bronco runners — Joey Berriatua, Bryan Crook, Kurt Ruegg, Mary Kriege and Kelly Ryan all qualified for their respective events.

"[Assistant Coach Pete Cushman] and I are very excited to be taking this group to Seattle for the Husky Classic," head coach Felipe Montoro said. "It is a very good opportunity to race against some of the top distance runners in the country."

Berriatua will compete in the 3000m race while teammates Crook and Ruegg will compete in the 5000m race. On the women's side, Kriege — coming off a cross country redshirt season — joins teammate Ryan in the 5000m race.

"We are taking athletes who are healthy and fit; the goal will be to compete hard and place as high as they can in their respective heats," Montoro said. "This marks the first time SCU has ever competed during the indoor season, but it is something that we are going to continue to do going forward as our team continues to grow."
