Cross Country/Track Announces 2015-16 Men's Recruiting Class

2015 Schedule | Women's Incoming Class

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Santa Clara cross country and track is set to welcome 12 men's runners as part of its recruiting class for the 2015-16 season, head coach Felipe Montoro announced Friday. The group of 11 freshman and one transfer student-athlete features soon-to-be Broncos from six different states.

"I could not be more excited to get this group of young men on campus and training together. The depth of talent of this group is unmatched in any previous class we have brought in," Montoro said. "There is great balance from the 800m cross country success among the group as well. Associate Head Coach Pete Cushman and Assistant Coach Darius Terry deserve a lot of credit for the work they did to bring this class together."

Austin Blankenship (Columbia River HS – Wash.)

CROSS COUNTRY

16th @ 3A Washington State Cross Country Championships (15:51)

TRACK

4:28.44 (1600 meters)

8:57.08 (3000 meters)

9:35.67 (3200 meters)

Coach Montoro: "Austin's desire to be a Bronco and help our team get better was very evident during the recruiting process. Austin gets better the longer the race gets, so I am looking forward to seeing him compete at the 8k distance this fall."

Carson Bode (Rockhurst HS – Mo.)

TRACK

49.19 (400 meters)

1:55.45 (800 meters)

Coach Montoro: "Carson has all the tools he needs to compete at the highest level. He has a unique combination of strength and speed that should translate very well to the collegiate middle distance scene. I am excited to see him try his hand at the 1500m some day as well."

Wilder Boyden (Valley Catholic HS – Ore.)

CROSS COUNTRY

Runner up @ 4A Oregon State Cross Country Championships (16:14)

TRACK

4:04.47 (1500 meters)

8:50.53 (3000 meters)

Oregon 4A State Champion at 1500 meters and 3000 meters.

Coach Montoro: "Wilder had a great senior year with big improvements over his junior year bests. Most importantly to us, he won the events that mattered most in the postseason. I think Wilder is one of the most under-the-radar talents in the northwest and will be a big part of our team's success in the next few years."

Aaron Brumbaugh (Mark Morris HS – Wash.)

CROSS COUNTRY

Runner up @ 2A Washington State Cross Country Championships (15:30)

TRACK

4:18.51 (1600 meters)

9:30.82 (3200 meters)

Coach Montoro: "Aaron is a true Renaissance man with a wide variety of interests from choir to the track. The common theme among them is that Aaron is really good at all of them. We targeted Aaron early as someone we thought would be a great fit for SCU and our team and couldn't be happier he chose Santa Clara. Aaron also has a chance to contribute right away this fall based on his runner-up finish in the WA 2A cross country meet."

Ross Corey (Woodside Priory HS – Calif.)

TRACK

1:54.51 (800 meters)

4:23.72 (1600 meters)

Coach Montoro: "I am very pleased to be adding Ross to our roster next year. He will be a great addition to our middle distance group and has the potential down the road to be a factor in cross country as well. He has great form, great speed and is a tough competitor. He has been well prepared for the next step in his training and has a bright future in the sport."

Fernando Gonzalez (Bishop Amat HS – Calif.)

CROSS COUNTRY

12th place @ D IV California State Cross Country Championships (15:57)

TRACK

4:21.82 (1600 meters)

8:46.96 (3000 meters)

9:27.61 (3200 meters)

Coach Montoro: "Fernando had a great senior year, but I think he is only just scratching the surface of his talent. He is built for distance running and has the desire and dedication to continue to work hard. Fernando is another guy who I think has a shot at contributing right away this fall."

Evan Misuraca (Westview HS – Calif.)

CROSS COUNTRY

Coach Montoro: "Like many of his new classmates, Evan had a breakout senior campaign. He ended up being one of the best all-around distance runners in the state of California from 800m-3200m. As he continues to mature and improve, I expect him to be a big part of our team's immediate and future success."

John O'Hagan (Regis Jesuit HS – Colo.)

9:53.48 (3200 meters)

Coach Montoro: "Jack comes to us from one of the most successful high school programs it the country. He has experience in national-level high school cross country races and will be a great asset to our team."

Jeff Stalun (University of Washington — Transfer)

TRACK

3:57.39 (1500 meters)

Coach Montoro: "Jeff had a standout cross country career at nearby Carlmont High. He didn't compete at Washington, but his desire to compete was too strong to stay away from the sport. Jeff is talented — he's really hungry to be a part of our team and contribute. He had a great track season running all by himself this spring. I am excited to see him compete."

Brenden Stone (Northwood HS – Calif.)

CROSS COUNTRY

15:33 @ Mt. Sac Cross Country Invitational

TRACK

1:55.32 (800 meters)

4:27.19 (1600 meters)

Coach Montoro: "Having played soccer all four years of high school, I was really impressed with how well Brenden balanced the two sports. With a year-round commitment to running, Brenden should see some major improvements in the coming years. His success at 800m and cross country coupled with his athleticism from soccer makes him a good candidate for the steeplechase on the track as well."

Jean Baptiste Tooley (Central Catholic HS – Ore.)

CROSS COUNTRY

19th @ 6A Oregon State Cross Country Championships (16:13)

15:24 @ Crystal Springs Cross Country Invitational

TRACK

1:55.57 (800 meters)

3:58.18 (1500 meters)

4:19.12 (Mile)

Coach Montoro: "What stands out most is Jean's range. I was also really impressed with his senior track season. Having been ill most of the fall, he bounced back really well and showed mental strength in the spring. His potential is through the roof and we will focus a lot on keeping Jean healthy. He was really well coached in high school and will be ready for college competition right away."
