SEATTLE — Santa Clara track and field started the spring with a 3000m section victory by freshman Jack Davidson Saturday at Dempsey Indoor as part of the Washington Invitational. The Denver native posted an 8:26.10 and outraced a field that included competitors from Arizona, Gonzaga and Washington State in his Bronco track and field debut.
"Jack had a fantastic track debut," associate head coach Pete Cushman said. "He executed the race plan perfectly and took the lead when he was ready, about 600 meters out. The 3k is a great distance for him."
The Broncos took three runners to the Evergreen State, including senior Joey Berriatua, who had not raced officially for Santa Clara since the 2015 cross country season. He also competed at 3000m finished with an 8:31.06 mark.
"Joey was sidelined for some of the winter with a minor injury," Cushman said. "He stuck his nose in it but struggled over the last K. He put forth a great effort and I'm eager to see him regain his fall fitness."
Sophomore Jean-Baptiste Tooley rounded out the Broncos field with a time of 4:19.94 in the mile run.
"Jean's race went out conservative, making it more tactical," Cushman said. "He reacted well to that, and this experience was a great tune-up for the season ahead."
Saturday's event marked the Broncos' lone indoor competition of the 2017 season. Santa Clara begins its outdoor campaign Sunday, Feb. 19 against Loyola Marymount, Saint Mary's and San Francisco at the Quad Meet in Orinda, California.
