Track and Field Runs Strong Season Debuts at Oxy Distance Carnival Spring Break Classic

RESULTS

LOS ANGELES — Santa Clara track and field wrapped up a span of three meets in three weeks Friday at the Oxy Distance Carnival Spring Break Classic. Three Broncos notched a top-five finish in their respective sections at Bill Henry Track as part of the team's fourth outdoor meet of the spring.

"We had some great individual performances and overall it was a solid meet for the group as we continue to prepare for competitions later in the season," head coach Felipe Montoro said.

Greer Chrisman made her season debut at 800m after running the 400m hurdles each of the last two weeks; she took second place in the heat of 12. Chrisman posted a personal best 2:19.30 to finish within a second of Mt. SAC's Teuila Gardner.

"Greer ran to win," Montoro said. "While she didn't get the heat win, she turned in a great performance and I'm excited that she set a personal best mark in her first 800m of the year."

Jeffrey Stalun also had a second place finish in his section at 1500m. The senior crossed the finish line in 3:56.39 — just north of half a second behind Loyola Marymount's Branden Estrada. Jean-Baptiste Tooley came within 0:01.26 of his personal best 1500m time with a 3:55.70 in his first crack at middle distance this season.

"I was very pleased with Jean-Baptiste's race; he was aggressive and went for the win early," Montoro said. "That's the best 1500 opener he's ever had."

Julia Wood led the way for the Bronco women at distance, taking fifth in her 5000m section with a 17:48.21. Montoro noted that the 5000m group ran well as a whole; that unit featured 11 of the 19 Broncos competing on the day. He also highlighted Ben Davidson's second 3000m Steeplechase (9:40.00) and said he believes the freshman is going to excel in that event.

NEXT MEET

The Broncos have a little less than three weeks off from competition. They will stay in the Bay Area for the San Francisco State Distance Carnival on March 31.

"We have been training very hard the past month and now we will back off a bit for dead week and finals week," Montoro said. "Hopefully we can be rested and sharp for our next event."
