Freshman Nabholz Leads Women’s Cross at Sundodger Invitational

SEATTLE — Santa Clara women's cross country began a stretch of three races in three weeks Saturday at the Sundodger Invitational. Freshman Janie Nabholz led the group individually with a 22:38.95 for a 42nd-place finish in the 6-kilometer race at Lincoln Park. The Broncos took seventh as a team, outracing Portland State and Hawai'i.

SCU kept a close pack at the top, as all five scoring runners finishing within 10 spots of eachother. Emma Eikelberner (44th – 22:43.86), Marisa Sanchez (47th – 22:48.66), Bevin McCullough (50th - 22:59.19) and Sarah King (51st – 22:59.57) also scored for the Broncos.

Host Washington had five runners finish in the top seven on its way to victory. The Huskies scored 22 points to distance themselves from second-place Oregon State (66).

NOTES

• Sanchez, McCullough and King all scored for the second straight meet.

• Eikelberner finished eighth among Bronco runners at the season-opening USF Invitational while Nabholz placed ninth.

Allison Martinez, Jamie Ferris, Ellie Kopf, and Emma McCurry also raced for Santa Clara.

NEXT MEET

Both Bronco teams return to the course next Friday, Sept. 22, for a dual meet with Saint Mary's at Baylands Park in nearby Sunnyvale, California.  Races are slated for 9 a.m. and 9:30 a.m.
