Santa Clara Cross Sweeps Saint Mary’s in Dual Meet

SUNNYVALE, Calif. — Santa Clara cross country held down its home course, Baylands Park, by sweeping a dual meet against Saint Mary's on Friday morning. The Bronco men tallied 24 points in the 6-kilometer race while the Gaels had 38. The Bronco women finished with 25 points and Saint Mary's totaled 36 in the 5-kilometer race. 

On the men's side, Santa Clara scored at 2-4-5-6-7 and had seven runners place in the top nine overall. Jack Davidson (2nd – 17:54.44) spent most of the race ahead of the pack and was edged by top overall finisher Raymond Boffman (17:51.16).

Joey Berriatua (4th - 18:26.15) took fourth place to lead a group that featured six Broncos with a spread of just over four seconds. Zach Litoff (5th - 18:26.22), Ben Davidson (6th - 18:26.32) and Evan Misuraca (7th - 18:27.57) also scored for Santa Clara.

Emma Eikelberner (3rd - 18:35.77) had the fastest time for the Bronco women, who scored at 3-4-5-6-7. Abby Bolt (1st - 18:02.50) and Grace De Leon (2nd - 18:22.51) topped the pack for Saint Mary's.

Bevin McCullough (4th - 18:54.52), Ellie Kopf (5th - 18:54.95), Janie Nabholz (6th - 19:07.34) and Allison Martinez (7th - 19:10.13) rounded out Santa Clara's scoring five.

NOTES

• Eikelberner and McCullough both scored for the second straight meet. Eikelberner took 2nd among all Broncos while McCullough took 3rd at the Sundodger Invitational.

Jack Davidson and Berriatua also finished 1st and 2nd, respectively, among Bronco runners at the season-opening USF Invitational.

James Konugres and Aaron Brumbaugh finished just outside of men's scorers in 8th and 9th place, respectively.

NEXT MEET

Santa Clara splits its squad for the Chile Pepper Festival (men – Fayetteville, Arkansas) and Capital Cross Challenge (women – Sacramento, California) on Saturday, September 30. Those meets mark the final tune-up races before the teams return home for the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational — also held at Baylands Park — on Saturday, October 14.
