LOS ANGELES/DAVIS, Calif. — Santa Clara track & field found itself in the mix at the top of its respective races consistently in both halves of the Golden State on Saturday. The Broncos notched 10 top-five finishes between the Oxy Distance Carnival at Bill Henry Track and the Aggie Open at Woody Wilson Track.

"It was a very wet and very successful trip South; the 15 athletes we took all ran very well," head coach Felipe Montoro said. "I was really impressed with everyone's focus on being competitive in their races.

"Everyone had solid efforts, but some freshmen really stood out. Ellie Kopf's debut 5k and Emma McCurry's first 5k were huge improvements. Zach Litoff ran 9:18.02 in his first attempt at the steeple for a great debut. Xander Olivero closed very well in the 5k and true freshman James Konugres was solid in his debut at that distance. Seniors Hannah Wood and Joey Berriatua also had great races — Joey's debut in the steeple is a very positive sign of things to come this season."
