Men's Cross Country/Track & Field Welcomes Three Newcomers

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Following a record-setting spring on the track, Santa Clara men's distance looks ahead to the 2018-19 cross country and track & field seasons. The Broncos will welcome Jorge Estrella, Spencer Fischer and Drew Burns to the team as true freshmen in the fall.

"I am extremely pleased with our recruiting class this year," head coach Felipe Montoro said. "We have added three guys who can all have an immediate impact and all have the potential to be very good at the next level."

Jorge Estrella

Andrew P. Hill High School | San José, California

6th 1,600m – 2017 California State Championships

12th – 2017 California Division II Cross Country State Championships

Coach Montoro: "Jorge is arguably the best distance runner in the Central Coast Section. During the cross country season, he won the CCS Division II title with the fastest time of the day in all divisions. In track, he was a California state meet qualifier at 1,600 meters as a junior and at 3,200 meters as a senior. I think that Jorge will adapt quickly to the 8k and 10k distances in cross country as well."

Spencer Fischer

Bellarmine Preparatory School | Tacoma, Washington

Personal Best Times

800m - 1:53.24

1,600m - 4:14.26

Coach Montoro: "Spencer has balance and range in in spades. He was one of the top runners in all of Washington in 2018. Spencer ranks in the top 10 among all divisions at 800 meters and 3,200 meters and is 12th in the 3,200m to go along with his 17th place finish in the cross country state meet. He has the tools to be extremely competitive at the Division I level in both track and cross country. He is a highly competitive individual who fit right in with our team on his visit."

Drew Burns

Brophy College Preparatory | Phoenix, Arizona

Personal Best Times

1,600m – 4:23.58

3,200m – 9:11.97

Coach Montoro: "Drew also seamlessly bonded with our group on his visit. He is a perfect fit for Santa Clara University and our distance team. Drew gets better the longer the races gets; he might be the most excited of the three to make the move up to the 8,000-meter and 10,000-meter distances the men compete at during cross country season. He has some stellar credentials at 3,200 and 5,000 meters, and I couldn't be more pleased that he is joining us."
