DAVIS, Calif./NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Santa Clara women's cross country continued to settle in to the 2019 season against strong competition in two meets over the weekend. Janie Nabholz led the team for the second straight week, running a 22:52.0 6k in the Vanderbilt Commodore Classic on Saturday to take 68th place and Greta Anderson crossed the finish line in 52nd place with a 6k 24:34.4 at the Stump Invitational on Friday.
Maiya Fujiwara (79th – 23:00), Emma McCurry (85th – 23:03.9), Noelani Obermeyer (86th – 23:04.7) and Sarah King (113th – 23:34) all scored for the Broncos in Nashville at Percy Warner Park. Nabholz, Fujiwara, Obermeyer and King placed in the top five for the second consecutive meet. Hannah Covington, Hannah Aguirre, Lucie Semone, Ellie Kopf and Claire Cocales also raced for the Broncos, who took 15th place of 20 squads.
Ole Miss won the meet, while Ohio State and Indiana took second and third place, respectively. Bailey Hertenstein of the Hoosiers was the first to cross the finish line, clocking a 21:08.
Three true freshmen comprised the scoring five at Wildhorse Golf Club in Davis, including Anderson, Luciana Lenth (55th – 24:41.6) and Sasha Codiga (61st – 25:14.5). Kalen Abe (57th – 24:46.7) and Hope Olbricht (58th – 24:48.1) rounded out the scoring five. Jackie Cruz, Emma Eikelberner, Kayla Neumann, Adelaide Vergnolle, Marisa Sanchez and Hayley Harrison also ran for the Broncos as they came in sixth place of seven teams.
UC Davis won its home meet by placing all scoring runners in the top eight for 25 points to edge Cal (33 points). Mina Anglero of the Golden Bears was the top individual finisher, posting a 21:43.9.

Vanderbilt: "This was definitively the most competitive race in the country for this weekend, and I think we did a really good job handling our nerves and the overall intensity of the race. Our spread one through four was 12 seconds. That's our strength, and I think we have the capacity to get our one through seven spread around 20 seconds, all while improving our overall position up front. This was a good measure to see where we are in the season, and we have a lot of room for growth. Everyone is motivated and excited, and we are all looking forward to seeing what we can do as we approach October and November."
Stump: "We sent a young squad to Davis and managed a good race in some nasty conditions. To send that youthful squad and beat a conference foe [Pacific] at full strength is a good indicator of the depth we are building."
