SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Cal's Trevor Hutchinson allowed just one run in six innings and the Bears held off a late Bronco rally to earn a 7-3 victory over Santa Clara today in the Broncos' home opener at Buck Shaw Stadium.

The Broncos (0-2) were led by sophomore Joe Diefenderfer and junior Pat Peavey, who went 2-for-5 each, while sophomore pitcher Matt Travis struck out six batters in six innings of work. Travis left the game at the end of the sixth inning having given-up four runs and eight hits.

"I thought Matt Travis pitched pretty well today against a pretty good Cal team," said Head Coach Mike Cummins. "I am happy with the way we battled back, especially late in the game. I liked the way Mike Theoharis battled at each at bat. He is certainly a leader for us. It was also good to see Pat Peavey get a couple of base hits today."

Cal (1-0) was led by Hutchinson, who struck out five and gave up six hits and one run in six innings. Cal's Conner Jackson and Carson White each went 3-for-5 in the game, while Jackson knocked-in a game-high two RBI.

The same two teams will play a 1 p.m. contest in Berkeley on Saturday and a single game on Sunday at Santa Clara.
