SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University baseball team ended its three-game series against Cal with a 7-1 loss Sunday at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Broncos fell to 0-4 on the season, while the Golden Bears improved to 3-0 with the win.

"Despite our outcome in this series, I think we showed improvement in a few key areas," said Head Coach Mike Cummins. "I am encouraged by some of our younger guys. I think they showed a few things that will help us as we develop our team during the early part of the season. I'd like to see some of our veteran players step-up and play better. We have a tough three weeks ahead of us with series against Fresno State, UC Santa Barbara and Stanford on the schedule. We need everyone to make solid contributions for us to become a better ball club. By the time conference play rolls around, I think we'll see a more confident and capable baseball team."

Freshman John Redmond (Canton, Ohio) received his first start as a Bronco and received the loss after giving-up six hits and two earned runs in three innings of work. Jared Anderson (Tucson, Ariz.), Chad Fillinger (Petaluma, Calif.) and Joe Diefenderfer (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) combined to pitch the final six innings of relief and allowed just five hits. Sophomore Jack Headley (Gilroy, Calif.) went 2-for-4 in the game with the Broncos' only RBI.

Santa Clara returns to action Friday at Fresno State for a three-game series against the Bulldogs.
