Santa Clara Baseball Edged by Bears 6-5

BERKELEY, Calif. - Cal second baseman Carson White hit a two-out, two-run double in the seventh inning to help lead the Bears to a come-from-behind 6-5 victory over Santa Clara Tuesday at Evans Diamond. The Broncos fall to 22-30 overall, while the Bears improved to 31-23 overall.

The winning pitcher for Bears was freshman reliever Matt Brown (3-3), who got the final two outs for Cal in the top of the seventh inning (0.7 innings, one hit, no runs, one walk). The Bears regular No. 1 starter, junior Trevor Hutchinson, pitched in relief for the first time since his freshman year and earned a save (first save, 1.3 innings, one hit). Hutchinson was able to get the final out with a runner on second in the eighth inning and got out of the ninth inning with a runner in scoring position.

The losing pitcher for Santa Clara was reliever Jim DeMartini (2-3, 2.0 innings, one hit, one run, one walk, three strikeouts), who gave up the double to White.

The Broncos were leading 5-2, entering the seventh inning. Sophomore designated hitter Brad Smith led-off the seventh with a homer to right field off of Bronco reliever Anthony Rea. Freshman shortstop Jeff Dragicevich followed with a single and then Ben Conley was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Dragicevich later scored on a wild pitch and with two outs, White came through with his second double of the game to left field, scoring two runs.

Matt Queen (2-for-4, two-run homer) and Joey Gomes (2-for-5, two RBI) were the top hitters for Santa Clara. White finished the day 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI, while Dragicevich and sophomore catcher John Baker had two hits apiece.

Santa Clara plays its final non-conference game of the season Wednesday night at San Jose State. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Municipal Stadium in San Jose. The Broncos end the conference season with a three-game series at San Francisco. With a sweep of the Dons and a Loyola Marymount sweep of Gonzaga, the Broncos would win the Coast Division of the West Coast Conference.
