Collegiate Baseball's All-American Teams

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara University rightfielder Joey Gomes was named to Collegiate Baseball's All-American First Team following his outstanding senior season on the Mission Campus.
Gomes becomes Bronco Baseball's 23rd All-American (10 First Team, eight second team, four freshman) in the 112 years of the program's existence after posting a .408 average with 97 hits, 31 doubles, 10 home runs and 51 RBI. Gomes joins Jeremy Guthrie of Stanford and Nate Gold of Gonzaga as the lone representatives on the first team from the West Coast.

The senior from Petaluma, Calif., had one of the best offensive years in schools history in 2002 and here's why. The .408 batting average ranked him No. 36 in the nation in 2002 and No. 3 in the Santa Clara record books for all-time single season batting average.
The 97 hits was the third highest total in the nation prior to regionals and ranked him second all-time at Santa Clara for hits in a single-season. The 31 doubles ranked second in the nation in 2002 but first all-time in Santa Clara history for a single-season, blowing by the previous record held by Mike Frank who had 25 in 1997. The 10 home runs was the second highest total on the team while the 51 RBI led the Broncos.
He ended the season with a 14-game hitting streak and started the year with a 12-game streak while notching at least one hit in 50 of the team's 55 games, and 28 of the teams' 29 conference games.
Additionally his 31 total doubles tied him for the West Coast Conference record in doubles while the 19 doubles in conference only games set a new mark that was previously held by Joe Ciccarella of Loyola Marymount in 1991. The coaches in the WCC honored him as one of only two players to be selected as a unanimous First Team All-Conference selection.
