SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Fourth-ranked Stanford just had too much offense as they out-slugged the Santa Clara University baseball team, defeating the Broncos by a score of 17-8 Tuesday night at Buck Shaw Stadium.
The Cardinal (22-10) pounded out 14 hits and capitalized on four Santa Clara (16-20) errors en route to their 17 run onslaught. Carlos Quentin had a huge night, leading the Stanford attack as he went 4-for-5 from the plate with two home runs, a double, a triple, six runs scored and six RBI. He belted a grand slam in the top of the fourth inning off Santa Clara reliever Anthony Rea that gave the Cardinal the lead for good.
Will Thompson went 4-for-4 at the plate for Santa Clara, knocking in one run, on his eighth home run of the season, to go along with three runs scored. Scott Dierks led off the bottom of the first inning with his 13th home run of the season, marking the fifth time this year that he has gone yard to lead off a game.
Drew Ehrlich picked up the win for Stanford as he threw the final 6 1/3 innings of the game in which he allowed only two runs on six hits while striking out seven and walking none. Ehrlich came on in relief of Billy Paganetti who allowed three runs on four hits in 2 2/3 innings of relief. Starter Tim Cunningham was knocked out of the game in the first inning after giving up three runs on three hits without recording an out.
Santa Clara starter John Redmond gave up five runs, three of which were earned, on only three hits in three innings of work before giving way to Andrew Slorp to start the fourth. Slorp did not record an out and loaded the bases after giving up two singles and walking Brian Hall to set the table for Quentin's slam. The loss for Slorp was the first of his collegiate career.
The Broncos return to action this weekend as they resume West Coast Conference play, welcoming the University of San Diego to Buck Shaw Stadium for a three-game series beginning Friday evening at 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday's contests are both scheduled for 1 p.m. first pitches.
