The Santa Clara University baseball team's series opening game with Pepperdine was postponed Friday afternoon due to steady rain in the Malibu, Calif. area. The game was halted in the bottom of the seventh inning with the Broncos trailing by a score of 7-3.
Due to West Coast Conference rules, all nine innings of the game must be played. Therefore, the Broncos and Waves will resume the game prior to Saturday's second game of the three-game series. The resumption of the series opener is tentatively scheduled for noon. However, with rain in the forecast for Saturday, the start time could change.
The series has huge WCC Coast Division implications for both teams as Pepperdine holds a one game advantage over the Broncos with their 17-4 league record. Santa Clara's 16-5 record in league play has been bolstered by their current eight-game winning streak in league play. Both teams went 11-1 in interdivisional play against the West Division.
Both teams have only nine conference games remaining, including game one of the current series. Following this series with the Waves, Santa Clara will conclude its league schedule with two three-game home series against Gonzaga and Saint Mary's. Pepperdine will travel to Saint Mary's for three games before concluding the 2003 regular season in Spokane, Wash. with three games against Gonzaga.
