The Santa Clara University baseball program added to its already impressive 2003 recruiting class when Steven Alexander signed a National Letter of Intent to play baseball on the Mission Campus Tuesday night. Alexander joins pitchers Jared Hughes and Tyler Duran, catcher Steve Lerud and outfielders Robert Perry and Nathan Faulkner as one of the top recruiting classes in the nation.
Alexander will join the Santa Clara family from Rocklin High School in Rocklin, Calif. While at Rocklin he posted a .333 batting average with a school-record 12 doubles, 22 runs batted in and 17 walks. He also registered a 5-2 record with a 2.00 ERA en route to All-SFL league honors.
As a junior he posted a .315 batting average while leading the team in home runs and saves. He earned All-SFL honors for the second year in a row and was named an All-Tournament player at the Villa Park Tournament. He also earned All-CIF Scholastic honors with his 4.0 overall GPA.
The 6-4, 225-pound first baseman will begin his time at Santa Clara in the Fall of 2003, bringing with him size, athleticism and power.
"He is very athletic for someone as big as he is," said head coach Mark O'Brien. "He will be able to hit for power and be that imposing physical presence in the middle of the lineup for us down the road."
The 2003 Broncos just wrapped up fall practices and will begin their 2003 season with a home game against Stanford on January 25 at 1 p.m.
