STOCKTON, Calif. - The Santa Clara University baseball team salvaged the final game of their season-opening series against the University of Pacific with an 8-3 victory Sunday afternoon at Stockton Ballpark.

Matt Wickswat threw five shutout innings in his collegiate debut for the Broncos (1-2) as they struck early and often to put Pacific in a quick hole. Kris Watts doubled twice in a 3-for-4 day that included three runs batted in.

Jason Matteucci continued his hot start to the year, going 4-for-5 with a double and a pair of runs scored. Ryan Conan also drove in a pair of runs in his only at-bat of the day.

On the hill Wickswat was ably backed up by fellow newcomers Justin Kuehn and Mark Willinsky who closed out the win.

Santa Clara will look to continue their momentum Tuesday afternoon as they continue the road trip in Davis, taking on the Aggies of UC Davis.
