DAVIS, Calif. - With the sun setting and the light dwindling at Dobbins Stadium in Davis Tuesday afternoon, the Santa Clara baseball team dropped an 11-6 decision to the UC Davis Aggies in an affair which saw the two teams score 11 runs over the final two-and-a-half frames.
Santa Clara (1-3) battled back to tie the game at six-apiece in the eighth inning on the strength of a pair of bases-loaded singles by Matt Long and Kyle Hartz, but the Aggies (2-0) answered with five of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Two costly throwing errors by the Broncos and a Lukas Kirby double provided much of the damage.
Each team's starter lasted through the first three innings, giving up a pair of runs. Down 2-0 in the top of the third, Carl Bacon led things off with Santa Clara's first home run of the season, a drive over the right-field wall. With the bases juiced five batters later, Jason Matteucci's fielder's choice plated the tying run.
Hartz continued his solid start to the 2006 season with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate, while Bacon walked and scored a pair of runs in addition to his home run.
Mark Willinsky struck out two in the start, while Jeff Lombard also fanned a pair of Aggie batters in his three innings on the hill.
The Broncos return home to Stephen Schott Stadium this weekend as they host the San Diego State Aztecs for three games. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. Friday night, and 1 p.m. for both Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are available by calling (408) 554-4660.
