BERKELEY, Calif. - It is never easy for a ball club to play a game the afternoon following a night contest, especially after a five-hour marathon of a night game, just as the Santa Clara University baseball team did Wednesday afternoon. Taking the field just over 15 hours after a 15-inning game last night, the Broncos couldn't generate enough offense in a 6-0 loss to California at Evans Diamond in Berkeley.
Cal's Chris Petrini tossed 5.1 innings of shutout ball, allowing only three hits to get his third win of the season while SCU's Sean O'Neill took the loss after going the same amount of innings but allowing six runs to cross the plate. Only three of the runs allowed by O'Neill were earned.
The Broncos (26-24, 7-11 WCC) dropped their fifth-straight and will attempt to get back to their winning ways Friday night at 7 p.m. as they host the Portland Pilots in their final WCC series of the season at Stephen Schott Stadium. Cal got on the board right away in the first, as a fielding error by the Broncos with two away kept the Golden Bears alive. After Brennan Boesch then stole second, Travis Howell singled him home and was subsequently doubled in by Jordan Karnofsky for the quick 2-0 lead. Chris Errecart's homer in the third made it 3-0.
Santa Clara could not get much going all day, being held to five hits by three Cal pitchers. Matt Long doubled for the Broncos while Daniel Nava also had a base hit.
After the Golden Bears got three more in the sixth, the Broncos managed to get a pair of runners on in each of the last two innings, but could not push a run across.
SCU will conclude conference play this weekend against Portland, with Friday night's contest set to begin at 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday's games slated for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
