Santa Clara Drops Game To No. 20 California

BEREKELY, Calif. - The Santa Clara baseball team (6-6) fell to No. 20 California (7-4), 20-5, this afternoon at Evans Diamond.  Big fifth and sixth innings by the Golden Bears put the game out of reach for the Broncos in the first of two games between the teams this season.

Santa Clara took a 2-0 lead with Matt Ozanne's third-inning RBI-single to center field that scored freshman Kyle DeMerritt and DeMerritt's fourth-inning RBI-single to right center, scoring sophomore Justin Viele.

Cal recovered one run in the bottom of the fourth inning with a solo shot to left field from Tony Renda.

A seven-run fifth inning and a 10-run sixth inning by California forced Santa Clara to cycle through six relievers through three innings.  The Broncos pulled to within three runs through 5.5 innings, putting the score at 8-5 after Ozanne's sacrifice fly scored junior Lucas Herbst and senior Patrick Terry hit a two-RBI double down the left field line, but the double-digit run inning by the Golden Bears quickly stunted the short rally.

Cal added two more runs in the seventh to put the final score at 20-5.  Santa Clara starter redshirt junior Joe Supple went four innings, striking out one and only surrendering two hits and one earned run.  His classmate Jason Westerberg was charged with the loss, his first of the season.  Junior closer J.R. Graham got in one inning of work, striking out two of four batters without giving up a hit.

Offensively, Herbst (3-for-6), Viele (3-for-5), and Terry (4-for-5, 2 RBI) registered multiple hits.  Ozanne finished with two RBI and DeMerritt had one RBI.

The Broncos return home for four games this weekend in the Jack Gifford Memorial Tournament at Stephen Schott Stadium.  Friday's game will be against Utah at 6 p.m.  Saturday SCU will take on UW-Milwaukee, also at 6 p.m.  Santa Clara will close the tournament with two games on Sunday, an 11 a.m. tilt vs. Utah and a 3 p.m. game vs. UC Davis.
