Broncos Move To 2-0 With 12 Inning Win Over Wichita State

SAN MARCOS, Texas - In its second extra-inning game of the day, Santa Clara baseball (2-0) beat Wichita State (1-1) by a final score of 7-1. RHP Brock Simon (0-0) turned in a terrific start for the Broncos by going 8.0 innings, allowing four hits with seven strikeouts and one walk. LHP Powell Fansler (1-0; 0.00) picked up the win by going 3.0 innings and allowing four hits with two strikeouts. Santa Clara finally broke through with five runs in top of the 12th to put the game away.

The first scoring chance came in the top of the second inning when 2B Kyle DeMerritt led off with a single up the middle and DH T.J. Braff followed with a walk. After a double-steal, 3B Matt Glomb flew out to center and DeMerritt was thrown out trying to tag-up. SS Justin Viele walked and C Zach Looney hit an infield single to shortstop to load the bases but CF Matt Ozanne struck out to end the inning with the score 0-0.

Viele led off the top of the fifth with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Looney. Ozanne reached on a  fielder's choice where the Shockers attempted to throw out Viele at third but were late. Herbst then reached on catcher's interference to load the bases again for the Broncos. RHP Foster Vielock came in for LHP Albert Minnis and gave up a sacrifice fly to LF Pat Stover to make the score 1-0 Santa Clara.

Wichita State tied the score at 1-1 in the top of the fifth when LF Garrett Bayliff singled up the middle and 2B Ryan Hege hit a two-out double to left field.

Santa Clara had another scoring chance in the top of the eighth when RF Lucas Herbst led off the inning with a single up the middle but was caught stealing after LF Pat Stover fouled out. With two outs, 1B Andrew Biancardi singled and advanced to third on DeMerritt's base hit to right field. Braff ended the inning on a 6-4 fielder's choice.

The next good scoring chance came in the top of the 11th inning when Braff hit a one-out single through the left side. Glomb followed with a single to left to put runners on first and second but Viele followed with a strikeout and Looney grounded out weakly to the catcher to end the inning.

The Shockers put together a rally of their own in the bottom of the 11th against LHP Powell Fansler when 1B Casey Gillaspie singled through the right side and DH Taylor Doggett singled to right-center that advanced Gillaspie to third. LF Garrett Bayliff was unable to to knock in the winning run as he grounded out to second to end the inning.

Herbst hit a one-out single in the top of the 12th and the Broncos had runners on second and third after Stover singled to second and both runners advanced on a throwing error. SS Walker Davidson made an error on a ground ball from Biancardi that let the Broncos take a 2-1 lead. DeMerritt walked to load the bases and LHP Drew Rainey came in to replace LHP Aaron LaBrie. Braff and Glomb drew back-to-back bases loaded walks to put the Broncos up 4-1. Viele followed with a single up the middle to knock in a run and Looney walked to make the score 6-1. After another pitching change, LHP Kyle Vail walked RF Stephen Takahashi to bring in the sixth run of the inning. Herbst popped out to end the inning.

RHP Chris Mendoza came in for the bottom of the 12th and got the Shockers 1-2-3 to end the game.

The Broncos return to the field tomorrow on Feb. 19 at 9 a.m. to wrap-up the Bobcat Invitational against Louisiana-Lafayette. The Ragin' Cajuns topped Wichita State 1-0 in their first game of the season.
